Mental Health Care Plan

Supporting Your Mental Health with Accessible, Evidence-Based Care

What is a Mental Health Care Plan?

A Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) is a referral from your GP that allows you to access Medicare rebates for sessions with a registered psychologist. It’s part of the Australian Government’s Better Access initiative — designed to make mental health care more affordable and accessible.

How It Works

If you’re experiencing challenges such as anxiety, depression, trauma, or stress — or simply need support to navigate life — your GP can assess your needs and create a Mental Health Care Plan with you.

This plan provides you with:

  • Up to 10 Medicare-subsidised individual or group therapy psychology sessions per calendar year

  • A clear outline of your goals and the support recommended

  • Access to high-quality, evidence-based mental health care

Steps to Get a MHCP

  1. Book a longer GP appointment

Let your doctor know you'd like to discuss your mental health and explore a Mental Health Care Plan. A longer consult gives them time to understand your needs.

  2. Discuss your wellbeing

Your GP will ask about how you’re feeling and may use screening tools to better understand your situation. If eligible, they’ll prepare a MHCP with you.

  3. Get your referral

Your GP will refer you to a psychologist — you can request to see Jess Grunberg specifically if that feels right for you.

  4. Book your first session

Once referred, you can book an appointment with Jess. The referral allows you to access rebates for your sessions under Medicare.

How Many Sessions are Covered?

You may be eligible for up to 10 rebated sessions each calendar year (initially 6, with the possibility of 4 more upon review). The gap fee will vary depending on the psychologist’s rates and your Medicare rebate.

Jess will talk you through this clearly when you get in touch.

Still Have Questions?

Feel free to reach out — Jess can help guide you through the process and answer any questions about rebates, fees, or what to expect.

Important Notes:

  • You must have a valid MHCP and referral before your appointment to claim the rebate.

  • MHCPs are not required for private sessions, but they can reduce your out-of-pocket costs.
