Mental Health Care Plan
What is a Mental Health Care Plan?
A Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) is a referral from your GP or Psychiatrist that allows you to access Medicare rebates for sessions with a registered psychologist. It’s part of the Australian Government’s Better Access initiative — designed to make mental health care more affordable and accessible.
How It Works
If you’re experiencing challenges such as anxiety, depression, stress, or trauma, your GP can assess your eligibility for Mental Health Care Plan.
This plan provides you with:
Up to 10 (6 + 4) Medicare-subsidised individual psychology sessions per calendar year
As well as, up to 10 (6 + 4) Medicare-subsidised group therapy sessions by a clinical psychologist per calendar year
A clear outline of your goals and the support recommended
Access to high-quality, evidence-based mental health care
How Many Sessions are Covered?
You may be eligible for up to 10 rebated sessions each calendar year (initially 6, with the possibility of 4 more upon review). The gap fee will vary depending on the psychologist’s rates and your Medicare rebate. You can access up to 10 individual sessions and 10 group therapy sessions.

Important Notes:
You must have a valid MHCP and referral before your appointment to claim the rebate.
MHCPs are not required for private sessions, but they can reduce your out-of-pocket costs.
